Culver City: A Story of Urban Progress

January 10, 2007

Culver City: A Story of Urban ProgressThe Young Leaders Group (YLG) of the ULI LA hosted a panel discussion on redevelopment activity currently underway, while also examining the groundwork that preceded present day gains. One hundred thirty-seven attendees filled MODAA, an art gallery at Studio Pali Fekete architects (SPF:a), a Culver City based architectural firm that generously donated their space for the seminar.

The YLG Case Study, Culver City: A Story of Urban Progress, brought together the most influential people in the redevelopment process.  The panel offered the perspective of the public and private stakeholders, as well as an urban planner and architectural design profession.

Sandy Albert of Cedar Signature Homes, and YLG Steering Committee member was the lead in planning this event.

“Our intent was to study a particular case from various angles,” stated Albert. “We wanted the audience to walk away from the case study excited about specific projects, and be excited about urban development, planning, architecture, and civic work. Most importantly, we wanted our audience to gain knowledge about the specific process and issues which have already happened, and are currently taking place in Culver City.”

Culver City: A Story of Urban ProgressMany topics were covered during the discussion. John Gunn, Development Executive for Urban Partners shared details on their complex mixed-use project. Steve Albert, AIA, President of Albert Architects Group discussed the mixed-use project his firm designed in the Culver City’s Helms District.  Todd Tipton described the initiatives the city established to create a real estate environment friendly to both the community and private investment.  Also touched on by Greg Angelo, Director of New Business Development, Metro Transportation Authority was information on the new specific plan for Culver City scheduled to launch early 2007, as well as plans for Metro stops along the city’s primary commercial corridors.

Attendee and YLG member Kevin Hanson, VP of Development for Bisno Development commented, “It was helpful to hear about Culver City’s approach to redevelopment, especially considering the complications of defining two distinct districts. I also found it interesting to learn about the two sizeable projects currently underway. There was a lot of information packed into a short period of time.”
