ULI Los Angeles Kicks off UrbanPlan 2007
January 10, 2007
Last year approximately 200 high school students – mostly in underserved Los Angeles communities—benefited from ULI's UrbanPlan program. UrbanPlan, one of ULI's most provocative and impactful programs, opens the world of land use up to young people who might otherwise never see the possibility of careers in city planning, architecture, real estate, or other land-related disciplines. UrbanPlan does so through the tireless work of ULI volunteers who guide young people through ULI's principles of responsible land use.
The program is designed around a competition that requires students from each participating school to break into teams and form a development company. During the semester, teams respond to a hypothetical Request for Proposals (RFP) from the City of Los Angeles to redevelop a real site, and final proposals are judged by a panel of volunteers made up of actual city planners, architects, real estate professionals, land use attorneys and other related professionals.
"Fundamentally, ULI's DNA is about education and thoughtfulness in the use and planning of land development," explained Michael Banner, chairman of the ULI Los Angeles chapter. "UrbanPlan exposes youth to the world of entrepreneurial thinking and strategic planning who might otherwise never have had the opportunity to think of themselves as participants and owners in the process. By making UrbanPlan a part of the LAUSD curriculum, we are able to reach these youth at a time in life when they are deciding who they are and what they want to be. UrbanPlan exposes them the potential, the values and creativity associated with responsible land planning and development."
ULI's Young Leaders are encouraged to participate and learn more about the program. Opportunities to volunteer include classroom visitations, mentorship, judging, sponsorship and/or contributions to the program through UrbanPlan Committee. Next year's program will begin in March 2007, with classroom opportunities in April, and final judging in June.
