The Anatomy of the Successful Urban Deal
Featuring: Maureen McAvey, ULI Senior Resident Fellow, Urban Development

Speaker: Amy E. Wetzel, Vice President, Buxton

Panelists:

Gerald Katell, Chesterfield Square/retail
Bruce Rothman, Korea Town/mixed use
Mark Weinstein, Santee Court/mixed use
Lula Ballton, West Angeles Plaza/retail

What does it take for an urban retail or mixed-use project to succeed? What are the most current techniques used by retailers and restaurants to make site selection determinations based on psychographics (life style, media habits, purchasing behavior), drive time and geographic information systems? How have cutting-edge developers and agencies addressed restrictive zoning, intensive environmental review, markets that are new to many lenders and investors, and entrenched interests to make exciting deals work?

ULI Senior Resident Fellow Maureen McAvey leads this discussion with four developers who are successfully pursuing inner city projects, in some cases where others have faltered.

Learn how lenders and investors underwrote these deals, how developers and agencies leveraged public-private partnerships, and how architects designed projects that work in an urban context. The audience will be invited to engage in an open dialog with the panel.

All attendees will also receive the newly-released ULI publication Higher Density Development - Myth and Fact.

YLG Case Study: NoHo Arts District
The once blighted community of North Hollywood is experiencing a renaissance of development after over thirty years of effort by community members and local government to turn this area into a vibrant place that will service and reflect its residents and users, mostly artists of every type.  The program will bring together developers, the Los Angeles Community Redevelopment Agency and some of the community groups that have struggled for the revitalization of this neighborhood to discuss the challenges and opportunities presented by using the NoHo Arts District brand as a redevelopment tool.
