Developers in TrainingFebruary 12, 2003PLOTS & PLOYS, Wall Street JournalBy Sheila Muto February 12, 2003 (Excerpt) This semester, 120 students at four public high schools in Los Angeles County started learning about land-use planning and real-estate development. The Los Angeles Unified School District began the pilot planning and development program two weeks ago with assistance and a $20,000 grant from the Los Angeles council of the Urban Land Institute, a nonprofit land-use research institute. The urban planning curriculum, which has been integrated into existing elective courses at the four schools, requires students to form mock development companies and work together to devise a plan for redeveloping a hypothetical urban downtown neighborhood within guidelines aimed at balancing the mix of residential, commercial and open space and revitalizing the area. The students will also select a neighborhood in their area in need of redevelopment and devise a land-use and development plan. Toward the end of the semester, the student groups will present their plan for the hypothetical neighborhood to a panel of judges made up of architects, developers and bankers, among others, from the Urban Land Institute Los Angeles. | |
