A ULI Advisory Services Panel Analyzes the San Pedro WaterfrontOctober 9, 2002BROADCAST TRANSCRIPTDate: September 30, 2002 Time: 09:04 AM - 09:04 AM Station: KPCC-FM Radio Location: Pasadena, Calif. Program: KPCC News STEVE JULIAN, anchor: San Pedro's waterfront could finally undergo cosmetic surgery of sorts if a new report gets some backing from the city and local politicians. KPCC's Anthia Raymond Beckler has more. ANTHIA RAYMOND BECKLER reporting: San Pedro's waterfront is vital; that's although it hasn't been upgraded since the 1960s. There's been a lot of talk over the years about fixing things up, but now could be the time. According to City Councilmember Janice Hahn, who represents the area, a new study just completed by the Urban Land Institute could finally give citizens and developers something to work with. Ms. JANICE HAHN (Los Angeles City Council): (unintelligible) bring all these people back to the table, people that want to develop housing here, that want to invest in our community, and move forward. BECKLER: The stretch targeted for improvement runs roughly from the bridge to the breakwater and into part of San Pedro's downtown. Hahn agrees with the plan, which says San Pedro should stick to its strength (sic) and not try to be Long Beach. Ms. HAHN: Build on your strengths. You have a beautiful waterfront. You have a great artist community. You have ethnic restaurants that they've said the rest of the country is envious of. You have this family, you know, cultural diversity down here that is very charming and unique. BECKLER: Hahn says getting support from politicians, business and citizens comes next. And if all goes as planned, a promenade along the water's edge will come soon after. Mixed-use development, including housing, will be the last stage. For KPCC NEWS, I'm Anthia Raymond Beckler. # # # | |
