Green and Clean: Mayors From Across the U.S. Share Insight on Park at Open Space ForumJuly 31, 2002By Susan Kamei Proclaiming that "a mayor's job is about stewardship, and that stewardship is about a green and clean Los Angeles," Mayor James K. Hahn recently convened a ULI Mayors' Forum in Los Angeles on the theme "Streetscapes, Parks, and Open Space." The one-day forum, under the direction of the Honorable William H. Hudnut, III, ULI Senior Resident Fellow and Joseph C. Canizaro Chair for Public Policy,brought together mayors and ULI members from across the country who shared innovations and "best practices" on developing and maintaining urban park systems in budget-strapped times. Forum participants Thomas Murphy, Mayor of Pittsburgh, and Ed Garza, Mayor of San Antonio, were among those who led the discussions on financing land acquisition of open space, developing community support for neighborhood renewal through parks programming, and safety and security considerations in parks management. Robert F. Maguire, III, Managing Partner of MaguirePartners, addressed the forum participants during a walking tour of Pershing Square and Maguire Gardens, two examples of downtown public spaces. The successful strategies for urban park systems and the design of successful city spaces identified at this forum will be featured in an upcoming ULI Urban Land article by Mr. Hudnut. To kick off the forum, ULI Los Angeles hosted a reception and dinner in the Rotunda of the recentlyrestored City Hall for representatives of Mayor Hahn's administration, mayors of cities within Los Angeles County, business and civic leaders, and the forum participants.
